Cocktails and Laughter with Michael Law
Marlowe Theatre Cafe Bar
With the opening bars of You're the Cream in my Coffee we were transported from the familar surroundings of the Marlowe bar to the art deco luxury of a 1930's cruise liner. This magic was brought about by Michael Law, pianist, singer and director of the Piccadilly Dance Orchestra which he founded in 1988. King's School and Cambridge scholar Michael entertained us with his solo performance of songs and stories from the jazz age - Cocktails and Laughter.
His musical fluency and masterly interpretation of Noel Coward's humourous lyrics brought a freshness to familar songs such as Don't Put Your Daughter on the Stage, Mrs Worthington which had the audience laughing out loud. Other less familar and slightly 'shocking' songs by Tom Lehrer contrasted with the sometimes sad lyrics of Novello and Gershwin and the more serious side of Coward in songs such as London Pride and Someday I'll Find You, all performed with great sensitivity.
Michael Law is much in demand and, as well as touring the UK with Sheridan Morley, he has performed regularly on the QE2, been seen on TV with Gloria Hunniford and, with his orchestra, plays regularly at London's Savoy Hotel in between theatre, TV and film appearances. He has already been booked to perform on the new luxury liner Queen Mary 2.
