The Piccadilly Dance Orchestra
The Kentish Gazette - 30 August 2001
“Think of the following: urbane, sophisticated, smooth, controlled, professional, authentic, stylish, …. Well, they all apply to this superb outfit!
Genial and erudite compere Sheridan Morley provided the theatrical and film backgrounds to the catchy light music played by this disciplined ten-man orchestra from the Savoy Hotel. Conductor / pianist / vocalist Michael Law provided class and talent as did glamorous Louise Cookman. They handled the solos and duets such as Lullaby Of Broadway, Isn’t It Romantic?, Let’s Face The Music And Dance and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? adroitly and with flair. With sensitive and controlled playing the songs ranged from the 20’s to the early 50’s with the emphasis on melody and strict tempo. Call it an unashamed wallow in pure nostalgia but it was none the worse for that. And it was such a relief for one to have just the right amount of amplification. The sound was superb and well balanced.
This jaunt through the golden years of Hollywod musical enchanted us with memories of Chevalier, Cantor, Astaire and Rogers, Berlin, Cole Porter and others.
This was one of the best shows of its kind I have seen at the Marlowe. ENCORE, please!”
